Friday Faves: What's in my Jewelry Box?

I like jewelry...you girls know that by now. I love statement pieces and fun pops of color, but I also have some pieces that I really cherish. I believe that jewelry tells you a lot about a person...so I thought "what better way for my readers to get to know me than to share what's in my jewelry box?!" It really wasn't much of a challenge...these are the pieces I would grab if there were a fire (okay, I'd grab E and my dog and cat first...). These are the pieces that I will pass on to my children one day and tell them stories about. I know that I will add more pieces to my collection, but for right now these are the simple pieces that I love most.

Five simple pieces...that's it...of course I love all of my jewelry and everything has some story behind it, but these are without a doubt the most important pieces of all.
My pearls. My dad started this strand of pearls for me on my 16th birthday. It started out as just a few pearls and he added pearls slowly to it. I loved watching the necklace get more and more full. Every birthday, every Valentine's Day he added pearls. The goal of an add-a-pearl necklace is that you will have a full strand by your wedding day. Well, I got married at 20, so 4 years wasn't quite long enough to finish it off. My dad did eventually finish it and it's beautiful...something I honestly don't wear enough. It will always be special to me because my dad got it for me. It will be something that (God willing) my daughter will get.
My J necklace. It may not seem like much...it's just a simple Tiffany's J necklace, but I bought it with my first paycheck when I got my first job out of college (no it didn't cost the whole paycheck). We were in New York for Thanksgiving and so it was the perfect reason to go into Tiffany's. I love having the reminder that I accomplished something by getting a job.
My class ring. You've never seen anything quite like it, have you? That's because it's one of a kind. Perhaps that's why I love it so much...or the fact that it was so much work to create. My mom has a yellow gold version of this ring that she bought when she got her Master's degree from UGA. I knew that I wanted one when I graduated, but I didn't quite know how hard it would be to get. The jeweler that originally made hers had gone out of business and every jeweler we took it to wasn't quite sure how to replicate it. Finally a jeweler said they could do it, but my mom's ring would have to be shipped to New York and a cast would have to be made of it. So they cast my mom's ring, poured my ring into that cast, sent it elsewhere to have the Arch hand etched into it and then it made the trip back home to have the diamonds placed in it. You won't find another one like it...it's pretty darn special :)
My wedding rings. My wedding rings are specials for obvious reasons. It started as my engagement ring and then my wedding band (top). When E was born, the bottom band was my "push present." It's a beautiful sapphire and diamond band that coordinates perfectly with my other band. I love having a reminder of E on my finger every day. I also love that they aren't sautered together because then I can wear them separately.
My pearl and diamond earrings. Another gift from my dad (can you tell I'm a daddy's girl?!) for my wedding. I wore these on our wedding day and I love them. They're simple and elegant, but can be a statement piece.

So even though I wear these big, loud statement pieces...I do love the simplicity of pearls and diamonds and sentimental pieces. What's in your jewelry box? Why are those pieces special to you? Share with me :)

Welcome to My House: Playroom

One thing I love about bloggers (maybe you hate it) is when they open their homes up on their blog. I'm going to do this from time to time (it's not going to be something that I say I'm going to do every week). My house is never spotless, things are always out of place...so just go with it. I have a kid, I have two pets and I have a husband...our house is a mess a lot of the time :)

I thought I'd start with our playroom. It started out as a huge, empty space that somehow quickly filled up. Every wall in our house was beige when we moved in and I knew that this was one of the first rooms I wanted to paint (it was actually the fourth).

Here's what it looked like pre-paint:

Hello boring beige walls.

Our playroom is over our garage and is an amazing space...it is literally the size of our garage with a full bath attached! It was hard for me to envision how I wanted to organize the space. I knew I wanted it to be fun and okay if something got messed up. I found the yellow "X" curtains on clearance at Land of Nod and thought they'd be the perfect neutral if we had a daughter down the road. I also decided that I wanted a theme throughout the room to be ABCs because it was something that would last awhile. I got the cube storage from Target (as well as the bins that go in)...I decided to use boy colors figuring that if we had a daughter down the line that she could have pinks and purples in her bins.

When I started painting the lime green on the walls, I got really nervous. I love how it turned out though. The pictures make it look a little different than it does it real life, but basically there are two big walls painted green and then the small enclave painted green as well. I've considered painting the two long beige walls another color, but I haven't figure out what exactly I want.

The random framed pieces on the wall (other than the big ABC print) are drawings that I did when I was little. My mom framed them and attached a picture of me at that age. I hope to do the same for E.

E's artwork hangs on twine with clothes pins in the playroom...this keeps our walls in the main living space from being messy and it also allows me to change out his artwork from time to time.

The blanket on the futon was my husband's when he was little. The playroom gets really cold in the winter (because it's over the garage) so it's the perfect blanket to bundle up with. The ABCDE pillows are from Land of Nod and I love them! They've really helped E with identifying his letters (at least the first five!).

So there ya go! My bright, colorful (and messy) playroom. When the anxiety of the mess is driving me nuts, I close the door and deal with it another day!

Thoughtfulness Wednesday: Happy Birthday E

I know it's usually Thoughtfulness Thursday, but I have to break with tradition because today is E's birthday!

Holy cow, my baby boy is THREE! Where in the world have the past three years gone?! Wasn't he just born yesterday? Wasn't I just waking up every three hours to feed this boy and wasn't he just learning to walk?! I can't believe he's three...should I say it one more time? He doesn't even want me to call him my baby anymore...he always corrects me and says "Mommy's big boy!" That alone makes me sad.

Even though it just seems like yesterday that he was born, my past three years have been filled with so much joy. I barely even remember the hard days that we've had because my heart and mind are filled with such great memories of him. E is opinionated and stubborn, funny and witty and loving and sweet. He is a mama's boy through and through...nothing makes me happier than when he comes running towards me with open arms and when we lie in bed at night and he plays with my hair and tells me he loves me. He has changed so much in the past three years. He has his own little personality and is quite the charmer. He's tough, don't get me wrong...boy will hardly cry if he's gushing blood...but oh boy does he like to cuddle.

No one can quite prepare you for the love you feel for your child. No one could have told me that I love him as much as I do or that I would do anything in the world for him. No one can tell you that your heart will feel like it's going to explode because you love them that much or that you're going to miss them even when you're gone for a couple of hours. I'm thankful that God has placed this sweet child in my care and that He trusts me to be E's mom.

I love this quote, "A mother carries. She carries him for 9 months to carry him then in her arms until she is carrying just his book bag as he travels on his own feet. When he leaves for college she carries his belongings to him. She will soon carry his grandchild in her arms. When she is no longer needed to carry, still she goes on carrying in her heart for him prayers, hopes, dreams and memories. A mother carries."
Happy birthday to my costume loving, crazy kisser, sweets addicted green-eyed boy. I don't think I can fit anymore love in my heart for this boy...I love him like crazy. Or as he would say "Mommy you love me to the moon?"

Tasty Tuesday: Lemon Garlic Chicken with Green Beans and Potatoes

I'll preface this recipe by saying it isn't the shortest amount of time you will spend on a recipe, but it is super simple and only requires a few ingredients (and it's a one dish meal so less cleanup). I love meals that look and feel fancy (and taste fancy) but are super easy. There's nothing better than people thinking you worked really hard on a meal and spent a ton of money when it was actually quite simple. This recipe comes from Real Simple.

Coat a large baking dish or cast-iron skillet with 1 tablespoon of the olive oil. Arrange the lemon slices in a single layer in the bottom of the dish or skillet.
In a large bowl, combine the remaining oil, lemon juice, garlic, salt, and pepper; add the green beans and toss to coat. Using a slotted spoon or tongs, remove the green beans and arrange them on top of the lemon slices. Add the potatoes to the same olive-oil mixture and toss to coat. Using a slotted spoon or tongs, arrange the potatoes along the inside edge of the dish or skillet on top of the green beans. Place the chicken in the same bowl with the olive-oil mixture and coat thoroughly.

Place the chicken, skin-side up, in the dish or skillet. Pour any of the remaining olive-oil mixture over the chicken.

Ingredients
6 tablespoons olive oil
2 lemons, 1 thinly sliced, 1 juiced (I actually use 1 1/2 lemons sliced)
4 cloves garlic, minced
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
3/4 pound trimmed green beans
8 small red potatoes, quartered
4 chicken breasts (bones left in, with skin, about 3 1/4 pounds) (I use boneless chicken breast)
Directions

Preheat oven to 450°F.

Roast for 50 minutes. Remove the chicken from the dish or skillet. Place the beans and potatoes back in oven for 10 minutes more or until the potatoes are tender. Place a chicken breast on each of 4 serving plates; divide the green beans and potatoes equally. Serve warm.
I pair it with a salad, bread and that's it!

Easy!

Monday Memories

Another whirlwind of a week but it was so fun! This upcoming week is a special one for us because E will be THREE

Maegan and I had our big meeting for work this week with the governor. It went great, was exhausting and was so nice to meet the gov.
E loves to hold my hand and I'll hold his hand for as long as he will!
I realized that this picture was taken right before E was born (3 days) and of course that brought back a flood of memories.
E got this awesome mask and he makes me dress up too...oh the things we do for our kids.
Thank goodness for beautiful weather and shorts!! (Ps that awesome green ring was posted on Friday!!)
E went fishing with my dad for two hours...can you spy him?!
My little superhero had a great time at his party (more pics coming soon!)
E's cousin came for his party (he's one month younger than him) and they had a great time!
Congrats Bubba (his autograph above) on the Masters!
